International place, Mashiko/ 国際的な町　益子町

　As many people know, Mashiko is a cosmopolitan town.

 

 

When my grandfather (3rd generation, Takeo) was alive,

 

 

there were some disciples from Western countries.

 

 

Of course, my grandfather and mother they could not speak English at all.

 

 

Also, disciples cannot speak Japanese. However, they could communicate well.

 

 

Pottery would be a bridge between them.

 

 

 

 

Most Japanese tend to be shy once they are in front of foreigner,

 

 

but my father also can communicate with them

 

 

with hand gestures and facial expressions.

 

 

He is not shy at all because he gets used to be with foreigner.

 

 

 

 

You can see European, American and Australian pottery artists and tourists.

 

Mashiko is in local place, but here is globalized town.

 

 

 

結構知られている(と思います）ことですが、益子は国際的な町です。

 

 

3代目の須藤武雄が生きていた頃、西洋から来ているお弟子さんが結構いました。

 

 

もちろん祖父祖母は英語をまったく話せないし、

 

 

お弟子さんもまったく日本語を話せないのに、

 

 

コミュニケイトしていました。

 

 

たぶん焼き物が橋渡しをしていたのかもしれません。

 

 

 

 

ほとんどの日本人は外国人を前にして萎縮してしまいます。

 

 

でも父は違います。

 

 

顔の表情や身振り手振りで何にも臆することなく、

 

 

コミュニケーションしています。

 

 

 

 

ここではヨーロッパ、アメリカ人、オーストラリア人の陶工や観光客を見かけます。

 

 

益子は田舎ですが、国際的な町です。
