Old times in Mashiko

It is really tough to take good quality pictures of pottery.

This time, my father challenged them.

Next time, I want to take some special tools to take pictures.

Mashiko's spring is really amazing.

I can enjoy green leaves and bright flowers.

Particularly I love rice fields filled with water.

It reflects the light in the night time.

Keep cool /

Every time I performed a tea ceremony in front of the guests,

I could not make it well and I always disappointed...

I recognized that the point is how I live in a daily life.

It is impossible to do perfect only for the show time.

I have to try perfect when I prectice, too.

GOOD practice makes perfect!

Life style

   Life style and culture background

These are very important factors when we start making products

Japanese and American, we eat different food with different manner

Hamada sensei used to travel all over the world, and now I can understand why he did

Without knowing culture, it is hard to create fancy products

Japanese sweets /

I believe that Japanese sweet is like a splendid movie

because each small piece has their own theme.

The beauty of nature and air.

Defilitely the Wagashi chef is an artist and like a director of movie.

Father's day

Today is Father's day!

I really appreciate that I have such a wonderful father!

He is the man whom I really trust. Thank you very much father!

Arigato gozaimasu (Thank you very much) / 感謝

My tea ceremony's teacher (sensei) always teaches us not to forget the sense of gratitude.

I just recognized that what our family lives with making potteries is owing to our ansesters.

They gave us the way. It is a very precious thing.

I just want keep this wonderful culture to the next generation.

Beautiful flowers /

Every time I take a tea ceremony lesson, I cannot leave without seeing beautiful flowers decorate in the TOKONOMA for a tea ceremony.

Here is USA, but my teacher has a lot of variety of Japanese flowers.

Many people whould like the western flowers, but I like Japanese flowers.

They are not special nor gourgeous, but I find the term of ”YAMATO-NADESHIKO."

YAMATO-NADESHIKO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamato_nadeshiko

Our work place and shop are located in very good place. As you can see these pictures, I can see the seasonal flowers and trees. Also there is a very tiny stream just behind my house. I can hear the sound of a rushing creek.

Yes Mashiko machi is surrounded by a bunch of blessing of nature.

Mashiko in spring season

I like spring season. It might be my birthday is in April,,, maybe.

In Japan, we have a common disease which is called ' May sickness'.

We have a big holiday from end of April to May.

It has slmost 10days!!!!!

Also, April is the biginning month of school and company.

Therefore, they start with fresh mind and they try to do their best,

but they have a looooooong vacation in 1 month.

That's why, many people are easy to lose their energetic emotion toward their new school or new company.

When I was a kid, I had a new teacher and new classmates, so I became kinda depression when I was back to school after a long vacation.

This long vacation is called Golden Week!

SO we have a pottery festival!!!

After I joined a pottery festival, I have never been in May depression!

Mashiko machi

Mashiko machi is located in Tochigi prefecture.

Most people know NIKKO. However, many of them do not know NIKKO is in Tochigi.

Actually Tochigi is not so famous prefecture.

There is no ocean in Tochigi.

But, Tochigi has NIKKO and NASU, MASHIKO_machi

You can enjoy a bunch of hot springs and beautiful mountain scenery!

Tochigi has beautiful nature!

I just tried to make it popular only Mashiko- machi, but I realized that I also need to introduce Tochigi prefecture!

Plate and Food

It is very interesting that we cannot eat food without plate

Some countries would use banana leaf

but it is also used as a plate

It is also very interesting that even if I bought a very fancy plate

I stop using it if it is hard to handle

I noticed that I have a lot of cups,

but I always use same cup when I  drink green tea

I chose that cup without notice

Therefore, I recognaized that I have to make potteries with beautiful shape and clothes as well as easy to use.

Very luxury way to use manju-plate

When I was a small kid, my grandmother made me a very delicious dish

It was an egg sunny-side up with batter and soy sauce

It is prohibited but she put the manju-plate on the fire directly

Spread batter on the surface of the plate and break an egg

By smelling the mix with the batter and the white egg,

pour soy sauce a little on the top of the egg

I really liked the crisp the edge of the plate

However, it was too hard to clean and the bottom became black with the high heat

Therefore, it became impossible to use as a dish

That's why I can say, this way of using this manju-plate is very dainty and luxury

Winter kids

I hear that this winter has been very cold in Mashiko.

It snows a lot.

All of sudden, I remember that the time of when I was an elementary kid.

It was a very very cold day.

Every time I and my friend mie-chan found icicles-hung on the tree's leaves,

we ate those! with my mouth on the way to my house from school.

I did not recognize at that time, but now I know that the time was precious for me.

Flash back to my childhood and this makes me warm like sunbeams streaming through leaves.

Japanese four seasons

As it is known well, Japanese has four seasons.

My mother told me on the phone that

She felt that spring had come a little by little.

Now I live in CA whose whether is much milder compared to that of Japan.

Japan is a very beautiful country.

It is limited the countries which have four seasons.

Therefore, I appreciate that I am Japanese.

Delicious food

The warmth of Mashiko-yaki

Mashiko-yaki is heavy compared to Kyo-yaki, or western porcelain.

I suggested that it was better to make lighter.

However, my parents told us that if the mashiko-yaki becomes lighter and thinner, it would lose the stateliness.

That is totally right.

The heaviness and the color and the shape create the nostalgia.

Tea Ceremony

One month passed since I restarted the tea ceremony lesson.

What I recognize is the DOUGU (potteries) which are used at

Tea ceremony are very lucky.

These potteries are handled with care and got unconditional love.

Tea ceremony teaches me real significance of creating pottery.

Wagashi is beautiful

Since I have started taking tea ceremony classes,

I meet wonderful Japanese sweets (Wagashi).

I think Wagashi is an art.

It is not just a food.

It varies for each season.

Spring is Pink, summer is blue, autumn is brown, and winter is white...

In addition, tea ceremony has a rule to get ahead of the seasons.

I can enjoy all seasons, and I excited to have a new season.

Japanese admire nature.

Season's flowers and natural plants always touch Japanese heart.

Exotic Japan

Since I have lived in USA, I deeply recognize that the beauty of Japanese culture.

Also, I see many Americans who love Japanese culture.

Even If I live in USA, I can find a bunch of Japanese places.

Sushi restaurant, Japanese tea house, etc...

Therefore, I am sure that Japanese lover also loves Mashiko-yaki.

1 / Sudo Takeo Mashiko no tuchi ni ikiru ( Living in the Mashiko) Part1

I will start translate a book which was written by my grandfather Sudo Takeo.

This book was made in Showa 56, 1981. Therefore, it is almost 30 years ago and my grandfather passed away 14 years ago.

I will be glad if you can feel old Mashiko and his life.

             Introduction

I was born in Mashiko and grew up in Mashiko. I have lived with Mashiko's earth for 50 years.

I have never been out of Mashiko. Also, I do not want to go out of Mashiko.

I love Mashiko's beautiful scenery of Yamizo sankei ( Yamizo sankei is a series of mountain. Mashiko-machi is surrounded by these mountains. )

I admire the all season. Mashiko's people are living warmly and gently.

 They live with nature.

Furthermore, to my joy, Hamada shoji sensei is my neighbor.

Therefore, I grew up with Hamada family.

My class mate was Hamada's 3rd son Atsuya, and we played with him every day.

I am very lucky because of my surroundings.

末広がり/ for the bright future (Suehirogari)

As you can see this picture, this cup has a pattern.

This pattern was created by my grandfather SUDO TAKEO.

He got an advice from Hamada Shoji.

Hamada sensei told my grandfather to make patterns which was related to good luck.

This pattern is a series of number 8. 888888 Can you see this??

The point is Japanese number 8 is 「八」. This figure shows becoming wider and wider.

Therefore, it means our life open to the bright future and full of good luck!

We Japanese like playing with word and this custom from Edo period.

Edo style was very sophisticated and very modern.

When you come to visit us, please find this pattern!

Mashiko machi's flower YAMAYURI

Mashiko machi's flower is YAMAYURI.

It is a white lily and has a rich aroma.

Summer is their best season,

and we can enjoy in my garden and my neighborhood, etc etc...

When I go hiking my neighbor forest,

the smell calls me where the YAMAYURI is.

The bright white color stands out in the forest.

I put Yamayuris in a vase in our gallery,

the person who gets into the gallery,

they can enjoy natural aroma.

The smell of summer

When I was a small child,

I used to take a walk with my grandmother.

She knew everywhere around Mashiko.

She was like a walking map!!

The place she took me was as a TORORO's secret path.

I enjoyed the sounds of cicadas and smell of fresh trees.

I got a lot of power from nature.

Sometimes I found a cast-off shell of a cicada, and I put it on my t-shirt like a broach.

For a small kid, Mashiko was a wonderland.

I was surrounded by a bunch of bless of nature.

English sounds

I restart taking tea ceremony lesson at USA.

I had a very good time at my 2nd lesson

because I met 2 American students there

and they call all tea ceremony equipments in Japanese.

Actually, I thought when I name the pottery in English,

it becomes something less WABI, SABI.

It might be same reason,

they said that they prefer use Japanese.

Even if the pottery is a masterpiece,

once it is called 'a bowl',

I feel very weird.

I think it is very interesting

because we use same word under the almost same definition,

the difference is just other languages.

Fancy products are expensive

When I sold potteries at my gallery,

I heard one phrase many times,

‘Fancy products are expensive. I cannot afford this.'

However, interestingly some customers came back in 6 months or 1 year later and they asked

‘Do you still have a stock? I remember there was a vase on this spot.....'

Unfortunately, most customers could not get that product because we do not make a lot.

They always said that they could not sleep well because they could not help thinking about the product.

Therefore, I learned that I should buy if I really want, even If it costs a lot.

Spring Pottery festival

The spring pottery festival is the most blooming season

I always walked from my house to my tent booth

On my way to there,

I saw many kinds of flowers

WHITE, RED, YELLOW

During the pottery festival, I did not have any time to look around

Therefore, the morning time was precious time for me

By thinking of selling the pottery,

I enjoyed the spring smell.

450 yen teapot

I always drink a green tea with a teapot from Japan,

which I bought at Japanese grocery store.

It was just a 450 yen (almost 5 dollars)

At that time, I did not want to break a teapot.

Therefore, I did not bring my family's teapot.

It is what I am regret.

I should have brought a persimmon glaze teapot.

It is hard to explain,

but I feel there is a lack something.

I think this feeling is from the difference between

99 cents mass-produced dishes

and handmade dishes.

Therefore, I swear I should bring my family's teapot with me,

when I temporary return.

Cafe place Mashiko

Nowadays, there are some fancy cafes around Mashiko.

I used to visit cafes to eat lunch or chat with my friends.

Some cafes have a very cozy sofa and lovely food

As you know well, Mashiko is countryside,

therefore, it is like a treasure hunting to find hidden cafes or bakeries.

I am so glad that Mashiko machi has becoming very fascinating place.

Simple is the best /

When I helped making a pottery,

I noticed one thing.

Every time I felt too much pressure because I wanted to make good one

I could not feel satisfied.

I tried and tried for many times.

The more time I spent, the more I made it worse.

Whenever I did not have any pressure and I felt relaxed

I felt satisfied.

Good pieces are made from the simple lines.

We do not need any awkward acts.

Therefore, I realized that SIMPLE IS THE BEST.

Success is 99 percent failure. (Honda Soichiro)/

A happy new year!

A new year has come!

I renew a sense of gratitude.

As Honda Soichiro said

Success is 99 percent failure

It is same as making good products.

It is challenging.

However, I will do my best!!

Let's have a wonderful year!

As you can see this design of this homepage,

I think Mashiko's winter symbol is a snake gourd's red berry.

I used to take a walk around my neighborhood

what I could find was only monotone color

However, the only thing that I saw the color

it was a red

Therefore, the red color is as if it were warm lamp

Winter in Mashiko

It is too cold

Ths coldness makes sky high

However I always can see beautiful stars in the sky at that night

That is a lovely time

Also I can see the orange light from the houses

The color makes me feel warm

Mashiko's pottery festival

Mashiko has 2 pottery festivals which are in spring and autumn.

What the fascinating thing to me during pottery festival is

not only the pottery but also outfit of customers

Their outfits show that they really like art

Some wear very cute with vivid color

others wear very unique jacket

I really liked watching them

It was like a window shopping

There is no accounting for tastes./

There are a bunch of pieces of crushed potteries in Mashiko-machi

Even if I helped a little to make pottery,

I know well the feeling who wants to crush potteries

Until the moment that we get from the kiln,

we never know that we can make it well or not.

If I cannot satisfy the works that I made,

I really want to break them.

However, interestingly some customers are into them.

Of course, the works that we thought we could make well, they were sold soon.

Therefore, I think it is interesting because there are some differences between a potter and a customer.

Even if we think that trash, some people think it is a masterpiece.

There is no accounting for tastes..

When my mother was a kid,

There were three‐wheelers on the street

At that time, the three-wheel was a major transportation

However, the roads were not paved

Therefore, every time the three-wheel passed

Gravel road was permeated with smoke

I cannot even image the time.

The Secret Shelf

When I was a kid, I did not live in Mashiko, so I stayed there every holiday.

As I told you before, when I was a kid, Japan had a very good time.

I remembered one story.

My grandmother told me one hidden shell

Then I opened the shell

There were a hundred of sweets.

Then she told me that I could eat anything I want

At that time, I was just a kid and I did not know anything

Therefore I just ate them as same as cheap sweets

I was a so fool to give sweets for a dog (Unfortunately it became diabetic.... I am sure; it was not only my fault.)

Anyway the secret hidden shelf was like a dream place for me

Amazake-sweet sake (Japanese hot drink for winter)

I and my brother like Amazake.

Every winter, we always make Amazake.

Put a pot on the wood stove.

Pour some water on the pot and later add koji and mix sometimes.

Koji is a same ingredient of Sake.

Amazake does not have an alcohol.

Amazake means sweet sake.

Add some sugar later...

We put a koji and sugar randomly,

therefore, the flavor varied on a moment-to-moment basis.

One time it was so delicious, other time it had a sloppy flavor.

I miss the smell of Amazake.

Painting

When I was in Japan, I sometimes helped my family to make potteries.

I always helped the part of the painting.

The painting is one of the most important parts of making pottery.

As you know well, the beautiful shape and the beautiful glaze and the beautiful painting create masterpieces.

Also, it was sooooo challenging work for me.

it looks very simple, but once I started drawing, I realized how hard it was.

I remembered that my grandmother had told me

that my grandfather had always practiced drawing, whenever he had a time.

Day and night

He kept on drawing on the newspaper with brush,

until his arms learned how to draw.

I might not be able to be like my grandfather....

The sounds of pottery from a klin

     Nowadays I feel so cold,

and it reminds me of the hot brand new pottery from the kiln

The new born potteries from the kiln make clear sounds like a brass instrument

The temperature in the kiln and outside of the kiln,

it has a huge difference.

At the pottery festival, I picked potteries from kiln

These potteries kept making sounds a few hours.

I recommend you to try to hear the sounds when you have a chance!

During good economic times in Mashiko

Japan had a booming period around 1980's.

I heard from one potter about a very interesting story when the Mashiko pottery festival in 1980's.

Customers came in flocks in the shop.

The potteries were sold out soon.

Therefore, customers even ran into the kiln of craft center,

and they grabbed the hot and brand sparkling new potteries.

It also happened to our shop!!

Unfortunately, nowadays it is a very bad economy in Mashiko.

I Hope many many customers visit Mashiko like 1980's!!

International place, Mashiko/

As many people know, Mashiko is a cosmopolitan town.

When my grandfather (3rd generation, Takeo) was alive,

there were some disciples from Western countries.

Of course, my grandfather and mother they could not speak English at all.

Also, disciples cannot speak Japanese. However, they could communicate well.

Pottery would be a bridge between them.

Most Japanese tend to be shy once they are in front of foreigner,

but my father also can communicate with them

with hand gestures and facial expressions.

He is not shy at all because he gets used to be with foreigner.

You can see European, American and Australian pottery artists and tourists.

Mashiko is in local place, but here is globalized town.

Wood stove and baked sweet potato

Winter has come!!

Mashiko is very cold place.

I guess the mid of winter is same as fridge.

When I remember the winter of Mashiko,

I feel my body becomes shrink,

but also I remember the wood stove in our craft center.

Baked sweet potato is so sweet as the name.

I just wrapped with aluminum and threw into the fire.

After 20 or 30 min,

it turned yellow and had a sweet smell like honey.

Then bite the juicy and flavored sweet potato.

I am sure that the electric oven cannot make this rich flavor.

Winter has come!!

The satsuma potatoes are waiting at the grocery store

to go to wood stove this yeah, too.

The time when firefly was in Mashiko

When I was a kid,

I remember that I went to rice field to see Firefly.

The rice field was just in front of our place.

I and my brother and my grand mother

were surrounded by a bunch of Fireflies.

We took some Fireflies, and we kept in a cage.

When I think about my childhood of summer vacation,

I always remember the flush of fireflies

and smell of fresh trees and goldfish of night summer festival.

God of kiln

At the new yeah,

we Japanese dedicate Kagami-mochi for god.

Also, we potter dedicate Omiki(Japanese sake) for each Klin.

My mother said that since she was a kid,

she saw that her mother or mother dedicated Omiki for Klin

because it is believed God lived in a klin.

The god must be in charge of fire.

For making pottery,

it is one of the most important factor how to handle with fire.

December has come.

I am sure that my mother dedicates Omiki for each klin.

I made small talk with my mother.

Mother
When I was a kid, residential used a horse-drawn carriage, not a car

Me
Really??? It is like a movie! It was just almost 50 years ago.

I was so surprised.

It was just after the war.

At that time,

there was no industrial product,

and they only used natural blessings.

The nature glaze and soil.

When she was a kid,

they take it for granted the harmonious life with blessing nature.

I feel that life is luxury and envious.

I believe that Japanese sweet is like a splendid movie

because each small piece has their own theme.

The beauty of nature and air.

Defilitely the Wagashi chef is an artist and like a director of movie.
